Black Artists Exhibit opening at “Art After Dark” Running June 7th-28th.  Hours:  Wednesday-Saturday 11:00 am-6:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 am-5:00 pm. Hosted by the Edna Contemporary, 967 Osos St., San Luis Obispo.

Master of

Ceremonies, Sylvia B. Henson

is a recognized thought leader focused on protecting rights of children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for the County of San Luis Obispo. She provides support and resources to marginalized and underrepresented communities ensuring their voices are heard and rights are protected.  Having many years as an IT professional, she develops and advances the technical skills for girls and young women interested in Software, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as women of color pursuing a career in engineering.  Sylvia is involved with organizations such as Black Girls Code, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), NAACP and the First AME Zion Church just to name a few. These affiliations underscore her commitment to serving her local community and additionally advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within corporate America.

For Sylvia’s contributions and achievements in the field of engineering and community leadership she was named one of Silicon Valley Business Journal's "100 Women of Influence," and received the Women in Engineering Champion award, honors that highlight her impact in her local and professional community.  She and her husband of 25 years reside in Nipomo, CA.


Speaker: Beatrice Nalubega

My name is Beatrice Nalubega, and I am 51 years old. I have five children and am a mother to many others. I got married at age 14 and am now widowed. I am the co-founder of the Starfish Education Fund, also known as the Jones and Beatrice Education Fund, which has been operating in the greater Masaka region of Central Uganda since 2013. Our NGO focuses on enabling children to attain an education. By equipping the youth with skills and knowledge, we aim to create a foundation for a brighter future. Our motto is "Making a Difference."

Freedom Lounge hosted by The History Center of SLO County, 696 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo. (across from Mission Plaza) The celebration will provide videos, education and Black art and history information for the San Luis Obispo County community.

Screening of the documentary “The Cost of Inhearitance”

THE COST OF INHERITANCE is a documentary that explores the complex issue of reparations in the United States using a thoughtful approach to history, historical injustices, systemic inequities, and the critical dialogue on racial conciliation. Through personal narratives, community inquiries, and scholarly insights, it aims to inspire understanding of the scope and rationale of the reparations debate.
