Keynote Speaker: Dr. Darren McDuffie

Dr. Darren McDuffie has been serving as the Superintendent of the Santa Maria-Bonita School District for the past three years, bringing over three decades of educational experience to his role. A native of Los Angeles, CA, Dr. McDuffie’s journey in education began after he graduated from Hollywood High Performing Arts High School, where he cultivated his passion for theater and music.

Dr. McDuffie’s career includes invaluable experience as a classroom teacher in both elementary and middle schools, as well as leadership roles as a principal at the same levels. He has served as a district administrator in human resources for many years and as a deputy superintendent of a K-12 school district. His deep understanding of the educational landscape and his commitment to fostering a nurturing and dynamic learning environment for all students have been cornerstones of his leadership.

Dr. McDuffie is supported by his wonderful wife, Kaishawn, to whom he has been happily married for 34 years. Together, they have raised two daughters, now 27 and 25 years old. Outside of his professional life, Dr. McDuffie continues to indulge his love for the arts, and sports. A life-long fan of the LA Dodgers, LA Rams and the LA Lakers...even still. His favorite college football team is of course the USC Trojans! Of course, this is the same school where he was able to receive his doctorate in educational leadership in 2009. His dedication to education, combined with his artistic background and personal commitment to family, shapes Dr. McDuffie’s holistic approach to leading the Santa Maria-Bonita School District towards cultivating bright futures for the students of the Santa Maria Valley.

Speaker: Mayor Erica A. Stewart

Screening of the movie “Who the Hell is Regina Jones?”

The name Regina Jones might not be widely known, but it deserves its place in pop culture history. The aptly titled documentary Who in the Hell Is Regina Jones? tells the story of how Jones created space for Black representation and voices in the media as the publisher of Soul. Running from 1966 to 1982, Soul was the first magazine devoted specifically to Black musicians and perspectives from the music scene. It’s a wonderful tribute, but also a spot-on account of the dedication and determination that goes into running an independent magazine
